Wednesday Updates – FAQ

In connection with our Wednesday updates, we will try to answer questions here as best we can.

First, good to know (FAQ is below):

Remember to leave your PC turned on!

Since we will be performing various updates and antivirus scans on your IT equipment tonight, please make sure your PC is turned on this evening from 5:00 PM until tomorrow morning.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Close all your programs
  2. Log off the computer (Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and then select “Log off”)
  3. Optionally, turn off the monitor

When you arrive at work tomorrow, start by restarting your PC.

Please note that PCs left on will undergo one or more forced restarts between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Therefore, it is important that you save your data and close your programs before leaving today.

For everything to work as expected, the PC must be turned on and connected to the Internet.

Help your colleague who is not at work!

Please check if your colleagues’ PCs are turned on before you leave. If a PC is off, please turn it on so it will be ready for updates. The monitor should be left off.

FAQ (Frequent Asked Questions):

Why exactly from 5:00 PM?
At 5:00 PM, the antivirus scan of your PC begins.

Given the current security situation, your PC should be scanned for viruses once a week. We have scheduled this for every Wednesday at 5:00 PM.

Where should you leave the PC?
The PC should be left at the login screen – meaning all programs must be closed, and the user logged off.

This applies to all users – including those with a laptop.

What if I am traveling?
It doesn’t matter where the laptop is in the world; as long as it is turned on and connected to the Internet.

Please note that the times mentioned are Danish time.

Does your PC go into sleep mode?
Please also check that your PC is not set to go into sleep mode.
Since there are many different ways this can be configured on individual PCs, please contact us if you are unsure whether your PC goes into standby.

What if I only see this email on Thursday or later?
If you read this email tomorrow (Thursday) or later, and if your PC was not turned on Wednesday evening for any reason, you can ignore this email. We will make sure to update your PC Thursday and/or Friday morning. Otherwise, we will try again next Wednesday.

If there are critical updates that need to be installed before then, we will ensure they are installed the next time your PC is online.

What if I need to use my PC Wednesday evening?
If you need to use your PC Wednesday evening, please let us know so we can exclude it. The antivirus scan will still run regardless.
If there are critical updates that need to be installed before next Wednesday, we will ensure they are installed the next time your PC is online.

What if I forgot to inform you that I need my PC Wednesday evening?
If you didn’t inform us, you can still use your PC with some limitations. It will run slower than usual at times, and you should expect that the PC will restart several times without warning between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM (Danish time), so working during this period is not recommended.

What do we do to your PC?
First and foremost, we make sure it is updated with Microsoft updates. Then we check for and update more than 100 different third-party programs such as Java, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc.

After that, it varies what we do. It can include disk defragmentation, removal of temporary files, flushing the DNS cache, and many other technical tasks that we technicians know should be done to make your PC run better and more optimally.
